about

A walking song. Wrote it while I was trying to put the baby to sleep. A good friend, my first friend in a strange new land, a friendly, worldly, intelligent and beautiful soul was the only person I saw on the walk - as usual he smiled at me, he didn't want anything from me, just wanted to give some love.

The melody came easily - walking song and putting to sleep song.

Cut to a week later, I was in LA, the strangest of all places. I heard that he had just dropped dead, beautiful kids, wonderful wife, the works. Out of the blue.

I was really shocked. A lot of people had died on me in the past, but this was so unexpected. And though we had only known each other a year, I felt closer to him than I did to people I had known for much longer, just because it never took anything from me to be with him. And he wasn't a Gomer Pyle either, smiling like a gumby at anyone walking past.

Buffalo Springfield were one of my favourite bands for a while, and the song Kind Woman always made me super sad. Ed Bates really worked the steel over, and Luterking came to the party again with a bit of twanging tremolo.

Also dedicated to my dear mate Peter Jones, a beautiful person and one of the sweetest pockets on the drums imaginable.

lyrics

Nothing in life can remain
rejoice in the sweetness
breathe through the pain

Hard as it is to control
the mind must let go
to free the soul

We can't replace the one we lost
we must carry on with our lives
So we embrace the rising sun
and remember our fallen stars

Where do our feelings reside
where do they go on the final tide

I'm calling you over the sea
this blessing I whisper
so tenderly

We can't replace the one we lost
we must carry on with our lives
So we embrace the rising sun
and remember our fallen stars
